Brief History of Spanish:

The history of the Spanish language and the origin of the dialects of Spain begin with the linguistic evolution of Vulgar Latin. Castilian & Andalusian dialects emerged in the Iberian Peninsula (Hispania) during the middle ages. The emergence of modern Spanish more or less coincided with the reconquest of Moorish Spain which was completed by Isabella of Castile & Ferdinand of Aragón.

Why should someone take Spanish?

  • Spanish is the world's third most spoken language, after Mandarin Chinese and English, and ranks second in terms of native speakers.
  • At the end of the 19th century, 60 million people spoke Spanish. Today, almost 500 million people worldwide speak Spanish!
  • Spanish is the mother tongue of approximately 388 million people in 21 countries (Mexico: 102 million, USA: 45 million, Spain: 44 million, Colombia: 44 million, Argentina: 39 million, Venezuela: 28 million, Peru: 28 million…) It is also widely spoken in many more where it is not an official language.
  • Hispanic consumers are the fastest-growing market segment in North America. Their population in the USA has grown by 60% in just one decade and their buying power is expected to exceed $926 million by 2007.
  • Spanish is the second most used language in international communication, and an official language of the UN and its organizations.

Spanish Tutoring

Thursdays after school in 1.593 and 1.604 from 2:15 and 3:15.

Spanish Study Tips

·         10-20 minutes a day of vocabulary drilling will help students retain words and phrases long term.

·         Using Spanish in the classroom will help to make the language “stick” and while sometimes it can be stressful provides the most long-term speaking and listening benefits.

·         Those who try and incorporate old ideas with new ones are those that retain the most and are best able to use what they have learned appropriately and accurately.

Spanish Student Organizations and Meeting Times:

·         Spanish Club – 1st and 3rd Monday of each month from 2:15-3:30, 1.593, $15 yearly dues

·         Spanish Honor Society – Induction in January

Spanish Special Projects or Events Planned:

·         National Foreign Language Week

·         Spanish Composition Contest

·         National Spanish Exam
